I have been using Avira Antivir free edition for some time now with no problems. I tried to manually update several times to no avail.
I like Win7 firewall, if it was like XP's firewall, well then I think I might go with a 3rd party. My mom's and sister's pcs were running Avast and I switched them over to MSE.
Since I can control in/out bound with windows native, then I go that route. Though MSE showed more ram usage, the os felt lighter and a little more responsive on both pcs to me.
